Abstract

Introduction: Health literacy is a dynamic and collaborative process that incorporates prior knowledge and experiences. The International Continence Society defines Urinary Incontinence (UI) as the “involuntary loss of urine.” Physical activity, particularly Clinical Pilates (CP), can provide significant benefits, being an adaptation of the original method designed for individuals with functional limitations.
Methodology: A cross-sectional, observational, and analytical study was conducted with an initial sample of 66 individuals, resulting in a final sample of 32 women aged between 24 and 76 years. Knowledge about UI was assessed using the Urinary Incontinence Quiz (UI-Quiz) and self-efficacy was measured with the Broome Self-Efficacy Scale. The aim was to determine the level of knowledge about UI in CP practitioners and their self-efficacy in contracting pelvic floor muscles.
Results: No statistically significant associations were found between UI knowledge and sociodemographic, clinical, or obstetric variables, nor between knowledge and the presence of UI.
Conclusion: No significant relationship was identified between knowledge of UI and the practice of CP. The low level of knowledge observed highlights the need to promote education and demystification about UI. The importance of conducting further studies in this field is emphasized, as lack of knowledge and misinformation continue to play a relevant role in society.
