Abstract

Communication in healthcare and clinical leadership are essential pillars for
ensuring quality and safety in care delivery, particularly within
multidisciplinary teams. Recent evidence (2020–2025) shows that structured
communication and collaborative leadership models are associated with
improved team coordination, reduced errors, and more person-centred care
environments. Challenges remain, however, related to rigid hierarchies,
communication failures, and limitations in technological integration.
Objective: To analyse how professional communication and leadership styles
influence the quality and safety of care provided by multidisciplinary teams.
Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted following the
PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The search was carried out between April and July
2025 in the PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO databases. Inclusion criteria:
empirical studies and systematic reviews published between 2020–2025, in
Portuguese, English, or Spanish, involving multidisciplinary teams with
nurses and/or physiotherapists. Exclusion criteria: editorials, letters to the
editor, and studies unrelated to clinical practice. The initial search identified
213 articles, of which 10 met the criteria and were included.
Results: The selected studies consistently report that clear communication,
structured task definition, and collaborative leadership styles are associated
with observable improvements in team coordination and overall functioning
in healthcare settings.
